Spin-parity assignments to levels in 132Xe and multipole mixing ratio measurements

Abstract

The level structure of 132Xe and the nature of the linking transitions were investigated by directional distribution and correlation measurements. Low-temperature orientation of 132I in iron provided a large nuclear alignment and high-precision gamma -ray anisotropy measurements. Also gamma gamma directional correlations were measured to help remove ambiguities in the analysis. Unique spin assignments are made for most levels below 3 MeV and parities are deduced. Values of multipole mixing ratios of 28 transitions are given. The results are compared with the predictions based on the generalised collective model of Gneuss and Greiner (1971) and with the SU(5) and O(6) groups of the interacting boson approximation (IBA) model. There is no strong evidence to indicate that the O(6) representation is necessary for the description of 132Xe.
